The meeting with your private English-speaking archaeologist, driver and his Mercedes limousine (or minivan) takes place at your disembarking at your cruise port .you will recognize them by holding a sign with your name on it. We reach Pompeii by car and your three hour private guided tour starts here followed by a short snack break. From Pompeii we drive to Herculaneum for another two-hour guided visit and return to your ship.
Pompeii and Herculaneum: different and complementary
Pompeii and Herculaneum are the only examples of Roman cities incredibly well preserved two thousand years later. They were buried by Mount Vesuvius during its eruption in 79 BC until their rediscovery in the eighteenth century. Both those archaeological sites offer an extraordinary cross-sections of everyday Roman life. Pompeii was covered with a thick blanket of incandescent ash that burned nearly all of the wooden objects and boasts the famous plaster casts. In contrast to Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried under a huge amount of mud that has preserved all of the wooden structures such as cots, doors, windows, papyrus, and many other everyday objects. It is much better preserved and less crowded than Pompeii.
