More Details about this tour

More Details about this tour:

Meeting with your private archaeologist at Pompeii by the entrance of Porta Marina Superiore, near the Bar Sgambati.

We’ll help you buy the online entrance tickets in advance without any stress: so you don’t waste your precious time in the line for buying the tickets.

Your archaeologist will explain and describe all the best monuments of the Pompeii ruins and will gladly answer any questions or curiosities you might
have.

IMPORTANT: After the first four hours, we’ll have a break for snack (20 minutes) before spending the other four hours there.

Your archaeologist will share boundless enthusiasm , depict the scene and anecdotes of Pompeiian life and provide vivid explanations about main monuments without wasting your precious time. Plaster casts of human beings, brilliantly preserved houses with splendid frescoes, public baths, shops of all kinds and slogans of political propaganda on the walls, all from the Roman era are brought to life. This and much more is what appears before the eyes of a modern visitor.

Brief History of Pompeii

Brief History of Pompeii

Pompeii, a small Roman town , together with Herculaneum and other neighboring towns, was completely buried by ash and pumice stones during the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius.Only in 1748 the excavations of the ancient Roman town began in order  to bring to light its monuments.Today this archaeological site is of great importance in Roman archeology for two main reasons:

  1. Since the fall of the Roman empire  Barbaric  invasions have progressively destroyed the opulent cities of the ancient world, leaving few poor traces of their past glory. But Pompeii is an exception. In the Middle Ages, during the barbaric invasions, Pompeii was hidden and buried under a thick blanket of ash and pumice stones. For many centuries no one ever knew exactly the place of its burial. Therefore, the  town has never suffered the complete destruction that marked the fate of the entire ancient world.
  2. Thanks to the absence of oxygen, two thousand years later, Pompeii has given the whole world incredible examples of the everyday life of the first imperial period (I century A.D.): houses, spa buildings, shops, streets, brothels, but also frescoes with vivid colours, colonnades, statues, jewelry, surgical instruments, ladles, spoons, knives, amphorae, etc and even 81 loaves of bread were found in the bakery which belonged to a certain Modestus.

Despite the heavy bombardment in 1943 by the Allies’ bombs which  destroyed a large area, your archaeologist will show you some parts of the Pompeii ruins not exposed to that destruction or brought to light after the Second World War.

N.B.: The entrance fees are not included
