What makes our Pompeii Herculaneum Vesuvius so special?
This guided tour is particularly suitable for lovers of Roman archaeology because it combines Pompeii and Herculaneum with Mt Vesuvius, responsible for their destruction during its eruption of 79 AD.
Having an English-speaking private archaeologist as tour guide throughout a day in Roman ruins like Pompeii and Herculaneum offers the chance to make the most of your “cultural experience”.
Complete flexibility according to your wishes: we can spend more time in Pompeii than in Herculaneum or elsewhere . Any schedule you require is welcome.
Why should you choose our Pompeii-Herculaneum-Vesuvius tour ?
- Having an archaeologist as a guide in Pompeii and Herculaneum is certainly a great value added.
- Having a private guide, an English speaking driver and a minivan just for you allows you to maximize the time available.
- We have been organizing guided tours for over 25 years and our experience in the field will certainly be an advantage for the organization of the tour.
More Details about this tour:
We’ll meet (with our English-speaking driver and his Mercedes minivan) by your hotel or cruise ship. Head straight to the top of Mt Vesuvius for reaching the top of the volcano. After that, we’ll head to Pompeii for a private two-hour tour with me. Break for a snack or a pizza. Later, from Pompeii, we’ll reach Herculaneum for another two-hour tour with me. Back to your hotel or cruise ship.
Few words about Mt Vesuvius:
Mt Vesuvius is composed of two peaks: Mount Somma (1132 m high) and Mount Vesuvius (1281 m high). It is the only volcano still active in continental Europe and, although very small, it is the most famous and studied.
In ancient times it did not have the celebrity of Etna and before 79 AD. it was known only for excellent wines; in fact its slopes were covered with vines and the top of dense woods rich in game, in particular wild boar. On the wine amphorae of Pompeii we often read the words “Vesvinum” or “Vesuvinum” that is “wine from Vesuvius”.
Mt Vesuvius is obviously known for its eruption in 79 AD which caused, with large pyroclastic emissions, the complete burial of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabia, etc.
Worthy of note is the battle of Vesuvius in which a Roman militia commanded by Gaius Claudius Glabro and a group of rebel slaves led by the gladiator Spartacus clashed. The battle took place during the third servile war in 73 BC. on the slopes of the Neapolitan volcano and it was won by the rebel forces who defeated an army of about three thousand opponents.
