The Temples of Paestum
The great wonders of the archaeological area, are the three Doric temples, among the best preserved of antiquity, which rise imposingly on the flat front of the sea: the so called Temple of Neptune, the so called Basilica and the so called Temple of Ceres. The first two were actually linked to the worship of the goddess Hera, and the third, located in the north, was linked to the cult of the goddess Athena.
National Archaeological Museum of Paestum
- The museum locals have an important collection of artifacts found in the areas’ surroundings of Paestum, which are the first funerary objects from Lucan necropolis. There are countless pots, weapons and painted tombstones.
- The most famous is the so-called Tomb of the Diver ( 475 BC ), a unique example of Greek painting of the classical age and the Magna Greece with a symbolic representation of the transition from life to death.
- Considerable as important is the series of fresco tombs, dating back to the Lucan period of the city.
In the museum there are also metopes cycles from the mouth of the Sele river.
