Pompeii guided tour
What makes this way of visiting Pompeii so special?
Explore with a real archaeologist the entire site of Pompeii in five hours, from the world’s oldest amphitheater to the district of the theaters, the most beautiful homes and the Villa of the Mysteries, the Thermal Baths and the brothels: all in one day.
Perfect for those passionate about Roman archeology and history.
WHY IS OUR FIVE-HOUR GUIDED TOUR OF POMPEII SO UNIQUE ?
Forty-four hectares (108,726 acres) of Pompeii have been brought to light and, for long, this archaeological site has been managed in dubious ways. Many streets were completely cordoned off without any information and there was shortage of personnel. In addition due to lack of funds, many Roman buildings were falling into derelict . But since 2012 European Union has granted 115 million euro the situation has progressively changed. A big part of the monuments have been restored and more and more areas are being opened to the general public.
Under these new conditions, Pompeii is a great place to explore in a day. A five-hour guided tour will be an unforgettable experience in one of the most fascinating places of the Roman archaeology.
VISITING POMPEII MEANS VISITING AN ENTIRE ROMAN CITY
The excavations of Pompeii started in 1748 and have unearthed a vast archaeological site. This place was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage in 1997 and now represents the second Italian monument for number of visitors after the Colosseum in Rome. The ancient Pompeii covers approximately sixty hectares (163 acres) and is surrounded by long city walls (three kilometers and two hundred meters – about 2 miles) with twelve watchtowers. This town boasts seven gates, plus one whose existence is still uncertain. , the city walls have become useless after the Roman conquest of town and rather than tear them down the inhabitants of Pompeii preferred to build outside the city walls and expand further with ever growing population This can be seen near the Sea Gate (Porta Marina) where they built the Suburban Thermal Baths and an Imperial Villa. outside the city walls are also located the necropolis as well as several imposing dwellings such as the Villa of the Mysteries which reminds us of the sheer size of the city and the number of monuments which can be visited in a day .Please note that this guided tour will only cover the buildings open to the public.
AFTER THE FIRST THREE HOURS OF VISIT YOUR GUIDE WILL ARRANGE A TWENTY-MINUTE BREAK FOR A SNACK (AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE IN THE LOCAL BAR WITHIN THE RUINS ITSELF OR YOU CAN TAKE ONE WITH YOU). THIS GUIDED TOUR CARRIES ON FOR ANOTHER TWO HOURS.
- DO NOT FORGET YOUR HAT, SUNCREAM, WATER AND A LIGHT LUNCH OR SANDWICH.
