Pompeii for All
The “Pompeii for All” project permits everyone to access easily the archaeological ruins of Pompeii, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1997.
People In Wheelchairs have to deal with a lot of architectonic barriers in the most part of the archaeological ruins which are usually not wheelchair friendly. However in Pompeii from Amphitheater Gate the disabled visitors can access a vast part of the archaeological site to fully appreciate on the full scale complexity of this amazing place.
Technicians, engineers and archaeologists have created an environmentally friendly specific path which permits wheelchair users to visit many areas of Pompeii. All interventions have taken places with most modern materials and by creating ramps that can be easily removed if needed.
The path for wheelchair visitors is composed of an hydraulic lime mixture without cement. Between July and September 2015 Naples University in collaboration with the Pompeii Superintendence have conducted 13 tests of the visual impact and mechanical features of the above mentioned limen and having validated and certificated the cement concluded that
when the new sidewalk gets in touch directly with archaeological structures, the surface of the pavement is made over an iron net to avoid any potential oxidation reactions. This whole process is entirely supervised by archaeologists and coordinated by officers of the Pompeii Superintendent, Massimo Osanna.
Why is our accessible tour of Pompeii so unique ?
In Pompeii ruins we have prepared an amazing accessible two-hour guided tour for the wheelchair users. From the Amphitheater entrance by following the main ways of the Roman town, the disabled visitors can now explore with us the highlights of Pompeii such as numerous houses, Thermal Baths, shops, the Amphitheater, the Gymnasium and many more major sites. In certain areas, disabled visitors may experience difficulties due to the nature of the archaeological site. The slope of some ramps may at times top 8%. There are little changes in height that are normally less than 5 cm.
